5 minute readIt’s not a competition. But if it was…
In this post we look at set up times and creating your first dashboard with Nacsport and then compare a similar process using SportsCode Output Windows.
Our colleague Laurie, in Nacsport’s Philadelphia office, made a video last week to help out a team of coaches she’s working with.
The new Nacsport users were eager to begin analyzing and Laurie’s goal was to provide them with a quickstart guide to creating their first dashboard - measuring team possession - for an upcoming match.
We were all pretty impressed that Laurie brought in her step-by-step video in under 2 minutes - and that she avoided the kind of technical jargon that can easily baffle those of us born before the year 2000.
We were even more impressed when someone in the office pointed us to a similar ‘quickfire’ tutorial they'd seen on YouTube, that clocked in at almost 4½ minutes. More than twice as long as our own effort and to be honest, with barely half as much achieved...
Maybe we should have guessed from the title ‘Scripting - Time of Possession’, that we were in for a long watch...
That said, it's a great video - made by Oliver O'Connell, performance analyst at Canterbury Rugby in New Zealand and owner of the sports analysis website O'Connell Codes.
But here at Nacsport, we believe analysts will always choose a system that delivers the results they want, in a way that’s easy for them to use. Something they can work comfortably with. And while that decision is out of our hands, it’s our goal to deliver a powerful resource that places meaningful, scientific data at your fingertips.
But we also understand that not every analyst has a master’s degree in sports science, or feels comfortable using complex computer programs. Which is why we invite you to watch both videos on this page and decide for yourself which you’d prefer to use.
First up, we have Laurie’s masterclass in agile analytics followed by - if you have the time and a reasonable understanding of algebra - the SportsCode tutorial. Remember, both are intended to get a beginner up and running with a very powerful piece of software.
*Warning: If you’re not familiar with creating complex equations such as -
$timeperc = round ((($time01/$totaltime)*100),0)
Or as Sportscode’s presenter handily explains:
"Time percentage equals round 3 brackets, because we’re going to have 3 different equations in this line of scripting, we’re going to have time 01 because we’re doing it for team 1’s time possession not team 2’s, bracket total time, close bracket, so that’s our first bracket, times 100, that’s our second bracket, comma zero, so that’s how much we’re going to round it down to. We don’t want any decimal points - or decimal numbers after that decimal point - so we’re just going to go round it to zero. That’s our final bracket…"
You may want to skip the second vid.
Seen enough?
This is only a sample of the many workflows and complex analytical processes you can manage using any Nacsport program. And it’s only one example of how quick and intuitive we’re making it for analysts to do their job effectively.
If you’re a Hudl Sportscode user and you still have your doubts about which system is quicker - and more intuitive - we challenge you to make a Sportscode Output Window with just a single pie chart and 3 values, as we saw in Laurie’s video.
Alternatively, if you’ve seen enough and would like to give Nacsport a try, why not book in for a free 30 day trial of any software in the Nacsport family. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results you can produce from day one.
