4 minute readWith an extensive international record - working with teams including both the American men’s and women’s squads, Puerto Rica, Colombia, Costa Rica and American Samoa - Julio Sainz is one of the continent’s most experienced international handball coaches.
Shortly after taking over for a second time, as Head Coach with the American Men’s Junior handball team. we spoke with Julio Sainz about coaching philosophy, his other job as a lecturer and the part Nacsport plays in both his current roles.
When and how did you discover / begin using Nacsport? Were you using any kind of software before?
I discovered Nacsport during the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. Arka from Nacsport USA contacted me via InstaGram. Before switching, I had been using Dartfish for over six years
What layers within the organisation are using Nacsport? (Only first team, full squad, women’s team, academy players, junior teams etc)
Currently, just the Men’s Junior National Team are using it.
Approximately, how many games do you analyse every week?
That depends on the length of the tournaments we play in. It averages from 1-2 games per week to 6-7 games during tournament time
How do you use Nacsport? What does a ’typical’ analysis involve for you?
Normally I like to analyze the games according to their different phases - attack, defense, retreat and counterattack - and the results of each phase.
This way I can analyze all the different actions within a match.
Each clip ends with a result and includes all the information I require to analyze the game from a technical-tactical perspective.
Do you work in real-time during games? If so what kind of information are you sharing and have you seen any benefits?
I only use live tagging; it’s my favorite feature of Nacsport. I’m excited about the way this feature will develop in the future.
How many people do you work with - as part of your analytical team and who do you report to?
There are three of us at the moment and we all work on different aspects of the game.
How is your work used? Do coaches and team managers use your presentations?
Yes, My work is shared with everyone at USA Team Handball, and whenever possible, incorporated into my International Handball Federation Commission of Coaching and Methodology presentations.
Do you focus on any particular areas of a game to analyse? And if so, which ones? Do you also look at opposing teams?
As my typical match analysis is based on different phases of a match and the outcome of each one, I automatically look and tag the performance of both our own and the opposing team.
How do you think the team benefit from your work? Are there long term benefits to club mentality?
Nowadays, video analysis is a non-negotiable part of wider team performance and review.
Analysis of previous games plays a big part in the overall planning of a team strategy for future encounters.
Are you achieving your analytical goals? What would help you be more effective or what frustrates you about your work?
Yes, I think we are, But it’s an ongoing process that is constantly evolving. We can always be more effective.
Have players and coaches ‘bought-in’ to your analytical work?
They are fully engaged. It is mandatory during tournaments and the regular playing season.
Do you use any other tools in your analysis or presentations? (KlipDraw, Tag&view, Sharimg)
At the moment no, although Klipdraw is on the horizon for future use.
